Come see, experience and learn about the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology (HOST) Park administered by the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), up-close. Tour begins at the iconic Gateway Visitor Center, one of the first platinum LEED certified green buildings built in the United States, with an engaging presentation and tour of the building. Presentation includes the history, purpose, current operations at HOST Park as well as information on advances in science, technology and engineering and innovative uses of sunlight and seawater combined with the research support provided by NELHA at the HOST Park campus. Learn about Hawaii’s Clean Energy Goals and how innovation at HOST Park is working toward meeting those goals on the Island of Hawaii, and Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Malama Hawaii program. Post presentation, you will follow the host in your vehicle to beautiful Keahole Point, where you will get up-close and learn more about NELHA operations, the HATCH aquaculture program and Hawaii Natural Energy Institute’s (HNEI) hydrogen fuel production station. The tour ends with a visit to Makai Ocean Engineering’s Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) facility. Keahole Center for Sustainability is a nonprofit that focuses particularly on technology showcased on the Big Island and here at NELHA. If you have even just a smidgen of curiosity about the Big Island’s role in cutting edge green energy, sustainable aquaculture, desalination, and research efforts, or if you have a passion for the environment and inspiring the next generation, this tour is for you!
