As part of our goal to foster a strong fibers program as an intimate way for us to reconnect to our aina, we have invited a host of Hawaii island artists that will take our keiki on a journey, exploring a range of aina-based projects inspired by our island cultures and the cycles of the moon. Young artists will learn about Mahina the moon, her stories, her songs, the patterns invoked by her many phases, and her favorite pastime - beating beautiful kapa. Projects will include, natural dyeing and pigments, paper and bookmaking with natural and recycled fibers, creative writing, gardening, drawing and painting. This experience will culminate in Emergence: Young Artist Exhibition that will be open to the public from Wednesdays - Saturdays, July 16 - August 15 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. The exhibit will showcase art form our Beyond the School programs and will be curated by Mina Elison & Gerald Lucena in collaboration with a select group of teens.
